- Organizational accountability: first and foremost, do you know who is at the top of the food chain and how it spreads out? It’s helpful to have an organisation chart to see where the lines of responsibility are drawn. This applies to the entire company, departments, and committees. It’s also crucial to understand what each worker in the law company does. It’s simple to check if there are any gaps if you have all of this information. Is there a need for another attorney in one of your areas of practise? Do the committees have adequate representation (that is, do they represent everyone in the firm and do the firm’s newer attorneys have a say)? What is the average length of service on a committee, and how do you get on one? Are there too many or not enough committees? When you can methodically identify the hierarchy, you’ll be able to see if the company’s operations are inefficient.
- Non-attorney staff: We all know that the individuals behind the scenes are the backbone of any law business. Your practise would not be able to thrive without administrative assistants, paralegals, librarians, IT, human resources, accounting, and all of the other non-lawyer functions. All of these persons should be listed on an organisational chart so that you know who to contact if you require assistance. They should be available to assist the firm’s attorneys in meeting all of their demands and requirements. You may discover that some of these employees are overworked, while others are underutilised. - Technology: Having up-to-date equipment and software is critical. It’s difficult to keep up with the latest and greatest in the technological world. Learning new tools isn’t always enjoyable—in fact, it can be excruciating, especially if you’ve only recently mastered the previous one!
