A cannabis dispensary, cannabis store, or cannabis coop is a public place where marijuana is legally sold for medical or recreational use. In the Netherlands they are known as coffeeshops. In America they generally exist as either an outlet for medical and recreational use, or a means for those who purchase marijuana to sell on to others. They are generally small and hidden away out of sight from public view. Homegrown Oregon Recreational & Medical Marijuana Dispensary Albany, Albany is an excellent resource for this.
In many jurisdictions across Canada, including Maritimes, there are specific establishments that cater to the selling and distribution of medical marijuana to people who are authorized to do so by a doctor’s prescription. These establishments are considered licensed cannabis dispensaries. A licensed medical marijuana dispensary is also referred to as a pharmacy, because it is primarily engaged in the sale and distribution of medical cannabis and not a retail outlet of the drug. However, some states have created registries that allow for licensed cultivation, distribution, and sale of the drug without a medical cannabis dispensary. All cannabis distributors are required to be registered with the state in which they operate, whether they are operating within the same state or a different one.
A cannabis dispensary may only retain a specified amount of marijuana each day. The retailer is issued a marijuana vendor permit, also called a vendor’s permit, to sell quantities that are stated on the permit. This is in effect an authorization to do business and is usually accompanied by periodic inventory checks to make sure that the store is not exceeding its allowed daily sales limit. Some stores allow customers to purchase their product without having to go through any sort of inventory check. This is referred to as a growing permit and has a tax advantage as well. Many growing permits are renewable and are good for three years or more.
